  • GDC 2018: Abragames presents the results of the event

Brazilian companies are receiving even more recognition from the global games market. Developers who have participated in GDC 2018 have returned to Brazil this week with several accolades and awards to show, and with the certainty that they are on the right track.

The Brazilian booth saw a massive flux of visitors, among them the Brazilian Minister of Culture, Sérgio Sá Leitão, who attended the event in San Francisco for the very first time.

This year, Brazil sent its largest and greatest group that ever attended GDC, with 44 companies and more than 120 professionals. The tour of international events, in which indie developers participate yearly, is an initiative of Project Brazilian Game Developers (BGD), a partnership between Abragames and Apex-Brasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency).

Brazilian developers received several awards at GDC 2018. We can cite that the game Relic Hunters Legend, by Rogue Snail, was the grand winner of the GDC Pitch; also, Rogue Snail again, and Bad Minions, have received Honorable Mentions at GDC Play; the game Plushie Mania, by Gazeus Games, was exhibited at Facebook’s booth, and Viking Days, by VR Monkey, at Intel’s.

“In 2017 tivemos, we succeeded with our Kickstarter and received investments from the south Korean company GTR. Now we debuted this year with a US$ 150 thousand investment from Ancine [National Cinema Agency] in Brazil, and this award at GDC,” celebrates Marcos Venturelli, CEO and Creative President of Rogue Snail.

According to him, the GDC award has opened many opportunities.

– It’s a recognition of the quality and potential of our work, and it has brought many investors and publishers to our booth.

It’s a validation of our vision and our efforts. Game projects may take years to take off, and during our journey Abragames and BGD were fundamental to our success; our presence at GDC could only be made possible thanks to the Project BGD.

Besides, foreign investors see in good light the interest of the Brazilian Government in the gaming industry, Venturelli adds.

This Government support has been shown with the presence of representatives of the Brazilian Government in the delegation.

The MInister of Culture, Sérgio Sá Leitão; the president of Ancine, Christian de Castro; the Head of Economy and Culture of BNDES, Luciane Gorgulho; and Igor Germano, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Division of Audiovisual, have attended GDC together with Brazilian companies for the very first time.

“We have broken every possible record at GDC this year; 19 companies exhibited their projects at GDC Play, we’ve surpassed our historic landmarks, and Rogue Snail winning GDC Pitch has shown that the Brazilian games industry has the capacity and the power to compete against every major Market in the world,” said Sandro Manfredini, President of Abragames, concluding: “Our objective is to keep growing, year after year.”
