PUBG Made in Brazil

PUBG, or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, has become one of the greatest successes in the industry of videogames last year, overcoming powerful titles like Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey and even Call of Duty.

The game currently peaks 3.2 million simultaneous players on Steam and has the astronomical number of 30 million copies sold on PC, and 3 million on Xbox One worldwide; however, what many people may not know is that Brendan Greene, the famous PlayerUnknown, bean working on the game in the Brazilian city of Varginha, in the state of Minas Gerais.

But why did he come here? Greene had fallen in love by a mineira, a Brazilian woman from the very city Varginha. So, he flew over to Brazil to live with her, but the relationship ended up not working out and he stayed over – for four years – saving money to fly back to his home country of Ireland.

Originally a DJ, photographer and designers, Brendan had never created a game in his life, and, according to him, he could barely finish a Zelda or a Metal Gear. In the meantime, he fell in love again – but now for the idea of developing his own game.

The first PUBG prototype was called DayZ Battle Royale, a popular mod for the survival horror DayZ game. Soon after, Greene started making mods for ARMA 3, where he polished his battle royale idea. Brendan didn’t know the first thing about programming and had to learn everything by himself, though.

However, it didn’t take long for it to draw the attention of the right people and this publisher from South Korea, Bluehole, invited him to make his own standalone game which became PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

A fun fact: on the game’s most recent map, “Miramar”, Brendan included a reference and homage to the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais where he lived and where PUBG was born. There’s a place in game called Minas Generales in the La Bendita region of the desert.

PUBG is a multiplayer survival battle royale, a genre created by the homonymous Japanese book where students in a secluded island must kill each other to survive. In PUBG, 100 players parachute down to an island where they must find weapons, vehicles and supplies, kill everyone off and be the last one standing.
