The Brazilian games are conquering the world, breaking records and winning dozens of awards. To celebrate the growth of our industry, and to reveal what’s to come in 2018, Abragames (Brazilian Game Developers Association) organized, last Thursday (23), the special event Abragame Presents: Successful Games, in São Paulo, Brazil. There, 20 of the best Brazilian game developers presented 25 of the best successful cases of 2017 to an audience composed of businessmen, industry professionals, journalists and representatives from the Government.
The success of the Brazilian industry is due to very hard work, over 3 years of effort from Abragames, from the Brazilian Game Developers Export Program, from Apex-Brasil (the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency) to strengthen the creation of independent games in Brazil through training, export policies, and participation in international events.
“This year was the best of our industry so far, possible through a lot of hard work of businessmen who have participated in the most competitive and specialized international markets in the world, supported by Apex-Brasil,” declared Eliana Russi, executive manager of the Brazilian Game Developers Export Program. “In 2018, with the beginning of new public investment policies, such as Ancine’s and Finep’s, the talent and determination of Brazilian developers gives us a clear and simple direction: our industry is strong and it’s here to stay.”
In 2017 for the first time ever the gaming industry started receiving financing and investments from the Government, totaling over R$ 30 million (circa US$ 10 million), and this type of investment has generated the results shown in the event. The 25 showcased games were financed in several ways. Most of them (14) was produced with the resources of their own companies, 10 of them were produced with public investment; 4 were made with international private investment, 2 were developed with the help of crowdfunding and one was made with national private investment. Most games utilized more than one form of financing.
“These new types of public financing for the videogames industry are fundamental factors for the production of games, and they were a turning point for the market,” declared Fernando Chamis, president of Abragames. “This year’s results have been amazing, as we could see with the cases presented in the event, and in 2018 they will be even better, with the new financed projects.”
Amongst the companies, there were 11 from São Paulo, 2 from Brasilia, 3 from Rio Grande do Sul, and 1 each from Santa Catarina, Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais. In total, these companies have employed almost 170 people in the creation of their games, which have won 28 awards and have received 24 other nominations. And a detail: almost half of them (48,5%) haven’t been officially launched.
The PC remains as the most popular platform for Brazilian developers, with 12 titles produced for Windows, followed closely by the mobile platforms iOS (8 games) and Android (6 games). However, the last-gen consoles PlayStation 4 (9 games), Xbox One (9 games) and Nintendo Switch (8 games) are the major platforms where these games will launch in the future.
