Does being a gamer helps you at the job market? Today I will present here a professional profile, different from the ones I have already written. Gamer since he was 6 years old – he started very early – Roberto Tadeu Rodrigues, a 36-year-old from São Paulo, has built a solid career for 19 years at Tefónica, a company that younger people in Brazil know as Vivo. In November 2019, he got a promotion to occupy a position in Spain, and his knowledge of the gaming universe played a part in his behalf.
He currently lives in Madrid, where he is Telefónica’s Global Manager of Digital Services – Cloud Gaming and Mobile Gaming, including taking care of alliances with companies in Brazil.
His knowledge about games and the fact of playing video games helped, but being a gamer was not the only requirement of the vacancy. Roberto dominates the technology universe as well, and what surprises me most is the way he knows how to explain complex IT and Telecom issues with the greatest ease, for non-expert people.
I know this because I follow his White Hightower channel on YouTube. At his channel he is known as Betão (nickname justified for being more than two meters tall) and simplifies everything that non-expert people need to know about IT, connections, 5G, in addition to playing classics like Final Fight, from Capcom.
YouTube is just a hobby, his day-to-day job is to establish and manage strategic partnerships between Telefónica and the main market players for Gaming services (Mobile, Cloud, Carrier Billing, Virtual Goods, among others). A curiosity is that the vacancy was for a position related to games, he risked and made a completely different CV, which you can check in the following images:
Roberto holds a degree in Business Administration from Unip and an MBA in Economics and Business Management from FGV. He is also fluent in English and Spanish.
And now the moment the everyone was waiting for…
Games and Esports: Tips to Work in this Area
- Broadening your focus will open up the range of options: Currently the gaming industry provides many paths and career opportunities in various media, but I realize that especially the younger ones, focus a lot only on the gamer digital influencer, which is not bad, but it is not the only option and that is saturated nowadays, which makes growth very difficult. The gaming industry offers you positions to develop games, work marketing and communication of these products, public relations, project management, and many other areas. Understand every opportunity and see which one suits you best.
- Study: Not only for the gaming industry, but as a whole it is always important to update yourself and you don’t need to be an undergraduate in a super institution, because there are excellent training that are more accessible which is good for those who are not able to pay something more expensive. The portfolio of courses for the gaming industry grows day by day, Graphic Designer, eSports, Business Management focused in Games, and many others.
- Make it clear to the market that you want to work with games and look at it as such: Many people I know with potential are ashamed to use games as examples in business meetings, moments of creativity, etc. Show them what you know and use the games you play or have played as examples, because after all this is an entertainment market that globally already surpasses the film and phonographic market.
“In my personal example, to come take this position here in the European market I created a Gamer CV based on all my experience as a player, influencer, writer, all focusing on games and not on my traditional work and it worked! Today I live in Madrid working in the company That I admire and Am responsible for developing future products and services of games with Microsoft, Sony, EA, Nvidia, among other giants of the industry! “says Roberto.
