  • Smartphones lead global games market to US$ 137.9 billion in 2018

Research agency NewZoo has just published an updated version of their 2018 Global Games Market Report. According to CEO Peter Warman, this is the very first time they’ve done so. “This is an indicative of the new dimensions of gaming and our industry’s ability to offer unique ways to engage,” he stated. In just 10 years, the global games market went up from US$ 35 billion in 2007, the year the first iPhone came out, to US$ 137.9 billion in 2018. By 2025, the market value of videogames is expected to reach US$ 200 billion. Thanks mainly to smartphones.

According to the report, smartphones have been a key contributor to the accelerated growth of the games market, in terms of engagement and revenue. Games like Fortnite Mobile, PUBG Mobile, Arena of Valor and Pokémon GO have brought major IPs to the small screen, which in turn have engaged players and generated massive profit. Fortnite Mobile alone made US$ 100 million in just 90 days.

The mobile segment is the largest one in 2018, responsible for 51% of the global videogames revenue – or an astounding US$ 70.3 billion. The vast majority of gamers – 2.2 billion people – play on mobile.

The Global Games Market

Latin America will grow into having 4% of the revenue share, around US$ 5 billion in revenue. It is also the second fastest-growing region on the planet, improving 13.5% every year. It is better than Europe (8.8%) and North America (10%), and behind only Asia (16,8%).

Brazil, the largest and richest country of South America, is responsible for US$ 1.5 billion alone. It is bigger than all its neighbors combined. This revenue puts the country at the 13th position in the global rank. In terms of online population, Brazil ranks 4th, with 142 million connected people. It is behind United States (265 million), India (481 million) and China (850 million).

China remains the largest games market in the world, with an yearly revenue of US$ 37.9 billion.
